Implementation

MaltoBar is a craft brewery located in the historic center of Grenoble. The two founders, Quentin and Benoît have decided to offer introductory workshops for brewing, to discover the brewing process using organic products. Alone or in groups of up to 8 people.

"During the 5 to 6 hours you will spend with us, we will cover all aspects of the business, from history to chemistry, through tips, recipe design, tasting and so much more. You will be able to ask all the questions that go into your head, our experience and our training will allow us to answer them. Depending on the application of the budding brewers and the choice of recipe, you will be able to leave with 16 to 19 liters of your beer in bottles (33cl and / or 75cl to compose according to the desire). Once the brewing steps are over, we take care of the fermentation and you can come back 3 to 4 weeks later to put your creation in bottles (count about 2 hours). You can then collect your bottles to enjoy 10 days later. Most of the recipes brewed here are going to age very well, so no pressure on the tasting, the more you wait, the better your beer will be."

Means

The founders financed their project with the help of a first bank loan, then through crowdfunding.

"Classic business creation, with loans, crowdfunding and help from GAIA (France Active). We were incubated at Pousada, a business incubator that accompanied us during all stages of creation and the first three years."

With their old equipment, the two partners will also offer to individuals the possibility to brew their own beer in the light of their knowledge. If a recipe pleases them, they do not exclude reproducing it on a large scale. A form of participatory beer.

Their main raw materials are bought for the moment in Alsace and Center France. Soon, the hops will be of Grenoble origin and the Malt from the Haute-Savoie. The ultimate goal is to produce as locally and organically as possible.

Results

MaltoBar participates in many events related to the ecological transition, such as the Zero Waste Festival in Grenoble in May 2019, or the “Biennale des Villes Transitions” in March 2019 in Grenoble as well.

Today you will find MaltoBar beers in two bars, several coffee shops and specialty shops in the city, up to 18 points of sale in all on the territory of Grenoble.

"And, interestingly, with “Cultivons Nos toits” and “La Tête à l'Envers” (organic and committed restaurant in Grenoble), we are launching a major project for an alternative place on a roof, which is scheduled to open in early 2021. It's “Le Bar Radis”, a bar restaurant and vegetable garden that will federate local initiatives around sustainable food.In addition, MaltoBar will soon become a cooperative and will launch “Le Commun des Mortels”, a complementary venue to “Le Bar Radis”. It will be a shared food manufacturing workshop around an organic, local and vegetarian tapas bar. The idea is to manufacture pasta, canned goods, ice creams and other lactofermented jars."

The Little Extra

Benoît and Quentin deliver all their products by bike trailer, retrieve bottles and return them to the deposit line Reverrecible (Grenoble) and reuse their grain waste (biscuits, animal feed, experimentation of insulating panels). Finally, the two founders of Maltobar, regularly make short videos, in a humorous tone  to communicate and sensitize their current and future customers on their project.

The two cofounders Quentin and Benoît brew classics but also more original beers. After three years of PhD and four years brewing in the living room, Benoit & Quentin decide to create Maltobar. They chose to invest an old grocery store of 80 square meters.
