Associative

Terra Madre

Context

Terra Madre is an international network of food communities - groups of small-scale producers and others united by the production of a particular food and closely linked to a geographical area.

The network brings together producers, fishermen, breeders, chefs, academics, young people, NGOs and local community representatives working to establish a high-quality, healthy and fair food system.

The Terra Madre network was launched by Slow Food in 2004 to give a voice and visibility to those around the world who have an approach to food production that protects the environment and communities. The first global meeting of Terra Madre food communities was held in Italy, bringing together 5,000 producers from 130 countries. Since 2004, the network has met every two years for a global edition, while national and regional meetings are regularly organised around the world.

The project

In line with the vision of "Another agriculture is possible", which supports good, fair and clean food, the municipality of Izmir has included the world's largest gastronomic fair, Terra Madre Anatolia, in its 91st edition of the Izmir International Fair in September 2022.

Local producers, farmers, shepherds, fishermen, economists, intellectuals, ecologists, anthropologists, writers, philosophers, cooks, representatives of producers' unions and cooperatives from Turkey and all over the world were present at Terra Madre Anatolia. With the vision "Another agriculture is possible", alternative means that can be used to get closer to the goal of healthy, good, fair and clean food spreading from Izmir will be discussed. With Terra Madre Anatolia, producers have had the opportunity to get together and talk about their problems, while consumers can find out about the farmers, fishermen and producers behind the products. Numerous workshops on access to quality, sustainable and healthy food and farming took place. A temporary farmers' market is organised to facilitate meetings between consumers and producers.

Results

The organisation of the 2022 edition of Terra Madre Anatolia has made it possible to showcase local producers from the province of Izmir and give Izmir a higher profile on the international healthy and sustainable food scene.

Who is it for ?

All residents of the Izmir region and the country. Local producers, breeders, distributors and restaurateurs are invited to take part in the event.
