Local vegetables for students

< back to initiatives

Context

A group of students were looking to act in favor of better food for students who often had a tight budget and had little time to cook and do their shopping.

Project

In October 2018 Le Marché Local grocery store and the Student Office (BDE) of the School of Political Science set up a partnership which aims to provide baskets of fruits and / or vegetables at 5 € or 10 €. These baskets are ordered by students from one week to the next through the Political Science BDE. The BDE takes responsibility for placing the order with the store, which then guarantees the distribution of fruit and / or vegetable baskets to students, either at the faculty (depending on the number of orders), or on the premises of the grocery store.

Le Marché Local is a grocery store selling local products in the city center of Montpellier. All the products sold (fruit, vegetables, drinks, dairy products, cold meats) come from a radius of 150 km around the city of Montpellier.

The products are bought directly from local producers before being sold in Le Marché Local shop, so it is a short circuit.

Project leaders

The Student Office (BDE) of Montpellier Political Science School decided to set up this project so that student members could consume local fruit and vegetables, from short circuits, within a radius of 150 km around Montpellier.

The Little Extra

This project meets a demand from students to consume local products and to favor short circuits rather than mass distribution, largely thanks to the advantageous prices allowed by the partnership.

Finally, local farmers can set their prices freely and limit intermediaries in the sale of their products.
