The context
With a population of over 15 million, Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most developed cities in Vietnam. Thanks to strong policies, the country has drastically reduced its poverty rate over the past 20 years. However, some sections of the population remain vulnerable, particularly the unemployed and the elderly. The Food Bank of Vietnam (FBVN) was established in 2017 to provide access to water and food for this most vulnerable population.
The project
FBVN was set up on the model of existing food banks around the world. It was set up by VTV Corp, a 10-year-old social enterprise responsible for numerous projects in Vietnam, with strong support from the Vietnam Red Cross. FBVN also works with many local and national associations.
Food is collected directly from supermarkets, food processing companies and restaurants and taken to shelters, social centres and shanty towns where it is cooked and distributed. FBVN also organises a 'food festival' to collect food and recently helped local producers sell their unsold sweet potatoes.
As well as providing decent meals for the most disadvantaged, the FBVN is also working to reduce food waste, which is seen as a major scourge in the country.
The results
In its 2 years of existence, the Banque Alimentaire has provided more than 20,000 meals to numerous organisations. It has also worked with 30 retirement homes. All of these initiatives are appreciated and widely reported in the local media.
Next steps
In the short term, Banque Alimentaire Vietnam aims to open shops selling rice at reduced prices and a cafeteria offering meals to the most disadvantaged.
In addition to facilitating access to quality food for all, the FBVN wants to continue its work to reduce food waste. The food bank plans to organise workshops on this topic with the residents of Ho Chi Minh City to promote best practices in reducing waste. On a larger scale, the aim is to spread the message about the importance of taking massive action against food waste in other major cities around the world.
The little extra
FBVN has developed its activities in Hanoi City and Đồng Nai Province.
