Context

Worldwide, almost a third of the food produced is wasted, which is quite significant. For the Middle East and North Africa region, this means 250 kg per person per year. To combat this high level of food waste, the TeKeya online application was created in Cairo (Egypt).

The project

The main aim of the TeKeya application is to reduce food waste and help protect the planet. To do so, it brings together various restaurants, grocery shops, bakeries and dessert shops that sell their surplus fresh food at low prices (50% discount) via this platform.  On the one hand, this digital tool enables suppliers to sell all their food products before the expiry date, thereby increasing their profits, broadening their customer base and contributing to a more sustainable society. On the other hand, TeKeya helps consumers to save money on their food by giving them access to fresh food at reduced prices (with the option of picking up the order in shop or having it delivered to their home).

Lastly, TeKeya also offers the various associated businesses and consumers the opportunity to donate food products to partner charities for those most in need.

Results

Tekeya has more than 33,000 users and 70 partners, with a total of 33,000 meals saved, 3,500 meals donated and 75 tonnes of CO2 avoided.
