Oléo Déclic, Collect frying oils (or HAU for Used Food Oils) in Marseille and its surroundings and use them in renewable energy

Context

Since the 2000s, Europe has set up agro-fuel chains based on new oils such as rapeseed, palm, soya in particular, which have catastrophic consequences on the environment and biodiversity and which require considerable extents of agricultural land and  fertilizer, not to mention transport miles etc.

Project

The Oléo-Déclic association is structured around three axes: waste, energy and short circuit. The objective is to promote recycling sectors and develop employment in the Marseille area. Oléo Déclic works on oils used on the territory to create energy or material recovery. The energy recovery corresponds to the supply of boilers, steam generators (to heat the brew or the stills for the distillers). It is also possible to use it to practice thermal weeding or to operate generator sets with in particular the principle of cogeneration (when a generator set works, it produces heat which is reused to heat a water circuit for example). Material recovery refers to the transformation of frying oil into chainsaw chain oil, detergent, or natural paint.

Oil is collected from professionals in collective and private catering, i.e. more than 200 collection points in the region. In 2018, almost 70 tonnes of used oil were collected. The customers are mainly local communities, artisans, brewers, condominiums, social landlords etc.

A fuel life cycle analysis was carried out and revealed that one liter of bio fuel represents 96% less CO2 in the atmosphere compared to one liter of fuel oil.

Today, the classic method for recovering used edible oils (HAU) is their integration into the agrofuel sector. They are transported by truck to factories where they are mixed with Pure Vegetable Oil and transformed into biodiesel by a transesterification process. This biodiesel is then incorporated into the diesel found at the pump, up to 7%.

If there is recovery, it comes at the cost of a strong environmental impact:

  • long distance transportation
  • heavy industrial and chemical process
  • energy-efficient end use (the efficiency of a car engine is between 30 and 40%, the rest is dissipated as heat)
  • other disadvantages of the agrofuel sector: competition with food crops and high CO2 emissions linked to land use changes

Project leaders

The association consists of its founder Alain Vigier and 2 employees and around 6 volunteers. The association was created in 2011 and is currently working in partnership with the post office to heat the sorting center at Pont de Vivaux. The association also carries out preliminary studies for communities wishing to identify the deposit on the territory, collection scenarios, and identifies the tools necessary for the enhancement of their territory and how to use these recycled oils again.

The little extra

Compared to other alternative collectors in France, the association is moving towards the combustion of bio-fuel to supply boilers, generators, generator sets, etc. The particularity of the project is to have developed an energy-efficient, low-tech process which consists first of all of a static decantation phase, followed by a dynamic decantation phase and finally a process of one micron filtration.
