Metropolis of Lyon : supporting co-owners to install a collective composter

Context

To develop the practice of composting and reduce the amount of waste in residents’ bins, the Metropolis of Lyon is supporting the deployment of shared composters on its territory.

Project

The Metropolis of Lyon supports the co-owners, members of a neighborhood association or a primary school who wish to install a shared composter in their residence, their neighborhood or their school. For this, the Metropolis:

  • provides the compost bins and accessories for its use,
  • organizes training for people responsible for the composter,
  • ensures the proper functioning of the composting site for 9 months (18 for schools). After this period, the composting site must operate autonomously.

It is also possible to consider setting up a collective vermicomposter within a building under certain conditions

Project leaders

The Metropolis of Lyon initiated the project but works to support projects and the development of composting sites with partner companies and associations: Pystiles, Trièves Composting and Environment and Rhône Insertion Environnement.

The Little Extra

Before a new compost site is installed, two referents per site are offered a half-day group training session with other project leaders. The training provides the basics to:

  • Understand the challenges of domestic and shared composting
  • Acquire or improve knowledge of the practice of composting
  • Acquire transmission tools and skills to mobilize new residents in the project
