ADEAR 13, Supporting agricultural employment and encouraging local farming

Associative

ADEAR 13

< back to initiatives

Context

In 10 years, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region has lost one farm manager in 5 and more than a quarter of jobs in agriculture. But agriculture remains one of the department's largest employers in the Bouches-du-Rhône: nearly 25,000 direct and induced jobs are generated by this sector of activity.

Project

ADAER13 wishes to support the agricultural projects of the territory while respecting the values of small farmers :

  • Develop the quality and taste of agricultural products
  • Develop farm autonomy
  • Support the farmer as a dynamic local player
  • Distribute production volumes fairly
  • Allow farmers to pass on their farms to new generations.

The ADEAR13 association, created in 2000, is committed to the development of sustainable agriculture, generating employment and added value for our territory, which contributes to the preservation of our terroirs and landscapes.

It is in this context that ADEAR13 implements actions operating in several complementary agricultural fields:

  • Support to set up new farmers: more than a hundred project leaders received each year; fifteen new farmers per year
  • Support for marketing initiatives in short circuits and more particularly the seven farmers markets that we are responsible for in the department: a hundred farmers and artisan bakers concerned
  • Promote a way of farming that is respectful of Man and his environment, by participating in events, farm visits, public renditions of local farming diagnoses, café meetings to help new farmers, local groups.

In 2019, the association had 10 smallholding volunteers on its board of directors and 266 members.

Project leaders

An ADEAR is an association which brings together farmers, the majority of whom are members of the Confédération Paysanne (The Confédération Paysanne has been, since 1987, a major player in French agricultural trade unionism which carries values of solidarity and sharing), and others actors of the rural world united by the desire to share their experience and their knowledge to maintain and set up new farmers and to bring to life the values of local smallscale agriculture.

The association was created in 2000, when producers from the Confédération Paysanne teamed up with the Cours Julien Association  to create the Cours Julien market. (The Cours Julien Association has existed since 1992 and involves residents, associations, traders and lovers of the Cours Julien in Marseille ).

The Little Extra

ADEAR 13 is a member of a network of 64 associations spread across the France and a member of our federation: FADEAR.

This collective, made up of farmers from the Confédération Paysanne among others, set out to create a farmers’ market because many had difficulty selling on long circuits. This opportunity was able to materialize in partnership with the Cours Julien association with the support of the City of Marseille.

Today ADEAR 13 runs 7 farmers’ markets, 6 of which are located on the territory of the Aix-Marseille metropolitan area:

  • Aubagne producers’ area
  • Cassis farmers’ market
  • Marseille Cours Julien Farmers’ Market
  • Gavotte farmers’ market at Pennes Mirabeau
  • Salon de Provence organic farmers’ market
  • Gardanne farmers’ square
